CHOOSING TO HEAL - by Janet Edwards

Choosing to Heal: Surviving the Breast Cancer System

By
Janet Edwards
(Watkins £10.99)

"This is a cracking good read and should be a mainstream addition to the bookshelf of doctor, patient and curious layman alike"
Maureen Lipman, Actor
"This book will be a huge comfort and inspiration to those who read it."

Amanda Holden, Actor

"This is a bold and brave piece of work. The weaving together of personal experience, an exploration of the science and the discussion of cancer as a system disorder are indeed unique, and all in a language that can be easily understood. It should be read by every woman who has ever had any concerns about breast cancer……..an enlightening read for both men and women."

Cancer Specialist, Dr Nyjon Eccles BSc MBBS MRCP PhD

"I want this book to engage and inspire any woman facing the frightening and horrific diagnosis of breast cancer."

Janet Edwards

In the UK breast cancer effects one woman in nine. But we treat it with a one-size-fits-all approach that all too often falls fatally short. Now one patient shares her experience and makes an impassioned argument for change, both in the politics of health care and in the life of every one of us.

Choosing to Heal by Janet Edwards is one woman's story of surviving breast cancer and a powerful case for a change in the way it is treated in the UK Health system.

A practical and meticulously researched volume of advice for women and men, supported and endorsed a number of respected scientists and doctors.

The book aims to guide and empower women through the breast cancer system by providing information in many areas. It also empowers women to know that there are safer forms of screening, along with information from scientists and doctors on steps to take towards the prevention of breast cancer.

"We are living in the 21st century and after decades, the official treatment still does not guarantee a ‘cure’. This being the case it is now absolutely untenable and inhumane that other, restorative, successful treatments of breast cancer are not being utilized."

The cumulative effect of what began as Janet’s search for other methods of treatment, was an eventual challenge to accepted medical wisdom and a momentous decision to refuse further chemotherapy (and later radiotherapy) and turn to restorative treatment in Germany. There, a nurturing course of orthodox and biological medicine was designed to honour the subtle intelligence of the body and restore its balance.

"I also want it to be a wake-up call for women showing them that they can – and must – be empowered to take charge of their own wellbeing. I want it to be a reminder that we desperately need a radical change in the treatment of this disease, and I want it to highlight the urgent need for a shift in legal restrictions which prevent better solutions for the patient."

Her book is a compelling and powerful case for a rethinking of both the treatment and politics; it is a review of conventional breast cancer care, which Edwards concludes is an extremely mutilating process harnessed to many of the new, so-called “wonder drugs” leaving a trail of devastating side effects.

Edwards – whose career as a musician, classical pianist and composer, vocal coach to artists at the Royal Opera House and ENO, also other artists such as Sarah Brightman, Michael Ball and X-Factor winner Leona Lewis was interrupted by her own diagnosis in 2001 – has produced a mesmerizing account of her own experiences and a fascinating insight into the breast cancer system in the UK.
